Day 2: Drugs that affecting the hearing ability

Some drugs that can damage the hearing function are called as ototoxic medications. There are more than 200 medications and chemicals that are known to cause the hearing and balance problems.

1. Antibiotics : Aminoglycosides (such as gentamicin, streptomycin, kanamycin and neomycin) or Vancomycin.

2. Cancer chemotherapy drugs : Cisplatin or Carboplatin

3. Loop diuretics ("Water pill") : Furosemide

4. Salicylates which is normally present in aspirin.


Some of the ototoxic drugs may cause the permanent damage and some are temporary. Be careful when taking any of these potential ototoxic medicines, discuss with your doctor, control the dose and dosing interval, or find the alternative medicine to avoid it.
