Day 6 & Day 7 : Skimmed milk vs whole fat milk, which is better?

I spent two days to search for the information for this topic.

I always curious whenever come to a department store where there has plenty of choices for the refrigerated milks, counted as skimmed, low-fat, or whole fat milk. What are the difference? Why have to break them into so many categories?

People tend to choose a less-fat milk for the purpose of reducing the calories intake, with a simple theory that "Less calories intake = control the weight gain". However, a good practice of nutrition isn't merely talking about the number, but we have to take into account the impacts of the food that potentially impair or enhance our health.

1. Is skimmed milk nutritionally beneficial to human?
As the name suggests, skimmed milk contains almost near to ZERO fat (~0.2 %), low-fat milk might have 1 - 2 % of the fat and a whole fat milk usually has ~ 3.25% fat content. The technology removes the extra fat comes from the cream. The fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, D, E, and K are removed too. Therefore, a skimmed or low-fat milk is always fortified with the vitamins to ensure they are nutritionally similar to whole fat milk. However, these artificial vitamins might not easy to be absorbed in the body without the fat granules.

2. Is skimmed milk reduce weight gain?
While whole fat milk contains more saturated fat, it isn't necessarily a bad thing - there is a controversy claims that skimmed milk is associated with weight gain especially in children. Several researches have shown that higher-fat milk let people feeling satiated longer, and thus reduced craving for other food.

3. Is skimmed milk natural? Hurgghh.....
There is an ingredient "powdered milk" added into skimmed milk to make it white. Otherwise, skimmed milk is slightly blue in color, chalky taste and watery texture without the fat granules, which is totally not similar to a regular milk. During the manufacturing of the powdered milk, it forms oxidized cholesterol and  toxic nitrates which contributes to the buildup of plaque in the artery and induces inflammation. Surprisingly, there is no such label about "powdered milk" in the skimmed/low-fat milk as it is not term as a separate ingredient, it is still a "milk" too.

4. What kind of milk is healthier and safer?
There are existing conflicts about which is better. Nevertheless, let's back to a basic, we can make a conclusion that a skimmed/low-fat milk is a processed food which is born of a factory while a whole-fat milk is born of farm and nature. The best choice is fresh, clean milk from happy cow grazing on the grass of a real farm. Live the life in an organic way and you are free from worrying over the choices in the food market.
