Day 23 : What is RON 95 or 97?

RON is Research Octane Number. It is a guideline to know the capacity of the fuel to withstand the compression before it detonates. In other words, a higher grade of RON fuel in your ride will make the engine become more difficult to auto-ignite (or knocking).

Higher capacity (cc) engine such as above 2,400 cc normally requires higher RON fuel as they deal with higher temperature.

However, it is nothing relate to the fuel quality.

The only concern is, we have to avoid using the fuel with an octane number lower than what the engine is built to handle. It is because this may lead to the problem of engine knocking or pre-ignition and even cause the engine explosion under heavy driving load or in the worst case scenario.
