Day 29 : Mercury and canned tuna and what about other fishes?

Fishes are important part of the healthy diet because they are considered as a rich source of omega-3 which is good for the heart. However, fishes are also a high risk group of mercury accumulation.

Studies shown that the mercury in tuna may cause brain shrinkage and damage the brain development especially to the infants and children. Tuna may also being contaminated by DDT, PCB pollutants, and the carcinogens benzene and putrescine.

Therefore, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are advising women who may become pregnant, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children to avoid some types of fish and eat fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury. Avoid eating those big predatory fishes  such as Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel because they contain high level of mercury.
